Charlotte, NC (Thursday, January 23, 2025) Discovery Education, the creator of essential K-12 teaching and learning solutions, today announced that the award-winning DreamBox Math has been enhanced to improve accessibility for all K-5 students. DreamBox Math by Discovery Education is a K-8 online math program that supplements core instruction in the classroom or at home, and is independently proven by several third-party research organizations to increase math achievement.

DreamBox Math by Discovery Education adapts dynamically to the learner, providing personalized instruction within a highly engaging, gamified learning environment. DreamBox Math lessons are available in both English and Spanish, and align to math standards in all states. Along with actionable reporting and tools that empower differentiation for all learners, DreamBox Math offers teachers content-specific professional learning and provides administrators critical insights into student progress. With DreamBox Math, every student is empowered to independently engage in interactive problem solving, so they can develop conceptual understanding, apply a variety of strategies, and gain competence and confidence in mathematical reasoning and skills.

To surpass compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines standards, the DreamBox Math product development team worked with teachers, special education experts, and students with disabilities to develop critical product enhancements that enable all K-5 students to engage with the highly effective program, including:

  • Improved compatibility with assistive technology tools, such as magnification and screen readers.
  • An enhanced screen reader with alternative descriptions that support concept understanding and streamlines problem-solving for students with limited and/or low vision.
  • Easy-to-tap, move, and place elements ease interaction and accommodate a variety of devices, physical needs, and learning styles.
  • Intuitive keyboard navigation lets students know where they are on the lesson page and within the manipulative.
  • Clear visuals enable students with low vision and color blindness to distinguish selectable foreground elements from the background.
  • All lessons now feature replay instructions, so students can easily refer to the task.

In addition to these accessibility updates, DreamBox Math’s popular Racecourse lessons — in which students learn to represent equivalent fractions as part of a whole — have been updated. Guided by student and teacher feedback, these improvements make it easier for students to get started and interact with the resource through lesson progression. Among the improvements to the Racecourse lessons are:

  • New, more relatable “Road Trip” context for students that makes tasks clearer.
  • Numbered intervals along the course that streamlines the problem-solving process.
  • Larger visuals and more space to make it easier for all users to place markers along the course.
  • Updated scaffolding to ensure students have support and meaningful feedback as they progress through the lesson.

“The new enhancements and updates to DreamBox Math make it even easier for students – including those with differing visual, auditory, cognitive, and physical abilities – to access high-quality learning experiences that support increased achievement,” said Melanie Lugo, Senior Director, Product Management at Discovery Education. “But we are not stopping here. We are committed to ensuring every student using DreamBox Math can progress at their own pace, experience joy, and gain confidence on their individual journeys toward mathematical excellence.”

Further updates to DreamBox Math K-8 and DreamBox Reading solutions are in the works and scheduled for release throughout 2025. Learn more about DreamBox Math here. Carson City, NV and Charlotte, NC (Thursday, January 16, 2025)— The Nevada Department of Education is proud to announce it has renewed its multiyear partnership with Nevada Gold Mines, operated by Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE: GOLD) (TSX: ABX), and Discovery Education

Renewed for a fifth year, this dynamic partnership is enhancing instruction in all 17 counties across Nevada by empowering educators to create engaging, modern learning environments for rural, urban, and suburban students.

Since the beginning of this partnership in 2020, more than 24,000 educators and 344,000 students have logged 4.6 million interactions with Discovery Education’s dynamic, digital, K-12 resources. The renewal of this partnership for an additional 12 months ensures uninterrupted access to all students and teachers using these resources.

“We are incredibly pleased to continue this powerful collaboration benefiting the state of Nevada,” said Jhone Ebert, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “Together with our community partners at Nevada Gold Mines, we’ve been able to create digital content that not only supports students’ academic achievement, but also connects what is learned in the classroom to potential careers right here in our state. The renewal of this impactful partnership preserves Nevada students’ access to best-in-class digital resources, and we look forward to continuing to work on our joint mission to prepare today’s learners for a bright future beyond graduation.”

In July 2020, the Nevada Department of Education announced the initial agreement to make Discovery Education Experience – a K-12 learning platform – free for all Nevada educators and students, ensuring access for families across the state.

Nevada is one of several states in which Discovery Education resources are used statewide. Other states include Louisiana, New Hampshire, Mississippi, Montana, and South Carolina.

“Nevada Gold Mines is honored to continue this impactful partnership that supports students across Nevada,” said Leslie Goicoechea, Manager, Community Engagement & Development for Nevada Gold Mines. “By helping prepare students for success in both higher education and the workforce, we are contributing to the prosperity of our state. We are proud to be part of an initiative that is making a tangible difference in student achievement and are excited to see the continued positive outcomes for Nevada’s future.”

Nevada Gold Mines’ partnership with the Nevada Department of Education and Discovery Education demonstrates a long-standing commitment to the state. In addition to supporting efforts to provide students access to best-in-class digital resources, Nevada Gold Mines has invested an additional $500,000 to aid the Nevada Department of Education’s efforts to increase the number of high-quality educators in the state.

As a global leader in mining, Nevada Gold Mines directly invests in social and economic opportunities including education, the environment, health, economic development, and cultural heritage. To date, Nevada Gold Mines has invested nearly $5 million dollars in enhancing education across the state.

“Recent research demonstrates the tremendous impact this powerful partnership is having on Nevada students,” said Coni Rechner, Discovery Education’s Senior Vice President of State and Strategic Partnerships. “According to preliminary findings from third-party researchers, not only did schools using Discovery Education resources see positive impacts on science achievement, but schools using Discovery Education resources also saw progress in closing achievement gaps. We look forward to continuing to work alongside Nevada Gold Mines and the Nevada Department of Education to ensure these encouraging trends continue.”

All educators using Discovery Education’s digital resources have access to the Discovery Educator Network.

A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Educator Network connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable idea sharing and inspiration.

3M and Discovery Education open submissions to the 2025 Young Scientist Challenge

St. Paul, Minn. and Charlotte, NC. (Jan. 14, 2025) 3M (@3M) and Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd) today announced that the 2025 3M Young Scientist Challenge is now open to entries. As the nation’s premier middle school science competition, the annual 3M Young Scientist Challenge invites students in grades 5-8 to compete for an exclusive mentorship with a 3M scientist, a $25,000 grand prize, and the chance to earn the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” Competition entries are accepted at YoungScientistLab.com until the deadline on May 1, 2025.

Each year, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge recognizes the grand prize winner, 10 finalists, four honorable mentions, and up to 51 state merit winners – nationwide and in Washington D.C. – who have demonstrated a passion for using science to solve everyday problems and improve the world around them.

“The 3M Young Scientist Challenge has sparked curiosity in countless inventors, innovators, and problem-solvers over the last 18 years, all before they even begin high school,” said Torie Clarke, 3M’s executive vice president and chief public affairs officer. “I’m proud of 3M’s support for this program that helps students get excited about the power of science and technology to address global challenges.”

To enter, students in grades 5-8 submit a brief video explaining their original idea to solve an everyday problem using science, which are evaluated for their creativity, scientific knowledge, and communication skills. This year, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge will offer students the opportunity to engage through new entry topics, including robotics, home improvement, automotive, safety, AR/VR, and climate technology.

“The 3M Young Scientist Challenge is a powerful testament to the incredible things that happen when students bring classroom knowledge to real-world problems,” said Amy Nakamoto, executive vice president of marketing and strategic alliances at Discovery Education. “This annual challenge elevates students’ remarkable creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills, showcasing their extraordinary potential to transform the world for the better.”

Previous Winners
Previous challenge finalists and 3M scientists have collaborated to create solutions for a wide variety of real-world problems, including cybersecurity, coral reef health, water conservation, food waste, alternative energy sources, energy consumption, air pollution, and transportation efficiency.

The 2024 winner – 14-year-old Sirish Subash from Snellville, Georgia – created Pestiscand, a handheld device designed to detect pesticide residues on produce using a non-destructive method. The innovation employs spectrophotometry, which involves measuring how light of various wavelengths is reflected off the surface of fruits and vegetables. A machine learning model then analyzes this data to determine the presence of pesticides.

Next Steps
In June 2025, 10 finalists will be chosen to participate in an exclusive summer mentorship program during which they will work closely with and learn from a 3M scientist. Each finalist then has the opportunity to compete in the final event at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota during an interactive competition comprised of hands-on challenges, presentations, live judging, and more. The grand prize winner will be announced during the final event October 13-14, 2025.

Now in its eighteenth year, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge continues to inspire and challenge middle school students to think creatively and apply the power of STEM to discover real-world solutions. America’s Top Young Scientists have given TED Talks, filed patents, founded nonprofits, made the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and exhibited at the White House Science Fair. These young innovators have also been named TIME Magazine’s first Kid of the Year, featured in The New York Times Magazine, Forbes, and Business Insider, and appeared on national television programs such as Good Morning America, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and more. In addition, a 3M Young Scientist Challenge Alumni Network was formed in fall 2022 and includes more than 100 former challenge finalists and winners who take part in networking opportunities and more.
